Australian Toy Safety

Australian Toy standard

The Australian Toy Standard (AS/NZ 8124) has been established by Standards Australia, Australia's peak standards body and all participants in the industry are required to adhere to what, in the main, are voluntary standards. The Australian Toy Association is represented on Toy Safety Committees of Standards Australia.

Consumer safeguards

A consumer concerned about the safety of a toy may notify a Department of Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs. If the Department determines that the product violates an existing regulation, or presents a substantial hazard, it may take steps to remove it from the marketplace usually after consultation with ATA.

Industry Compliance

While there is no requirement that toy manufacturers and distributors abide by the industry's voluntary standards, the ATA strongly advocates adherence by the entire toy industry to the voluntary safety standards. It is a prime obligation of ATA membership to adhere to these standards.

Federal and State Governments and Toy And Safety

Toys are closely monitored and highly regulated by the Federal and all State Governments.

Safety standards for toys are established by Standards Australia, Australia's peak standards body and all participants in the industry are required to adhere to what, in the main, are voluntary standards. The Australian Toy Association is represented on Toy Safety Committees of Standards Australia.

However in a number of instances, in particular in those parts of the Standards relating to toys for children under three, State Governments and the Federal Government have enacted Regulations to make mandatory those parts.
